StopSpread: Effective and Safe Disinfection Services

Cleanliness is at the forefront of the mind, as the island starts to grapple with the second wave of COVID-19 cases. StopSpread – a new company – offers effective and affordable sanitization and disinfection services for home- and business-owners wanting to take extra safety precautions.

The company uses a “List N” disinfectant, which meets the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) criteria for use against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Moreover, the product is applied using an ultra-low volume (ULV) fogging system, which generates a mist of ultrafine droplets (between 5-50 microns in diameter) – ideal for tackling pathogens.

It leaves a micro thin film on surfaces – without any dripping or oily residue – which is safe for people and pets, won’t damage computer equipment or leave marks on paper. As such, aside from putting away food items, companies don’t have to worry about covering materials before fumigation.

“It’s about using the right product, but also following the right process and procedures,” says StopSpread Chief Executive Officer Iliya Hamovic. “Disinfection, which is about eliminating pathogens, is different from regular cleaning, which is a mechanical removal of debris. We use very powerful substances that need to be handled in a certain way. Training and certification are important, and we have US [United States] certifications to handle and apply disinfectants.”

The disinfectant in use is versatile, in that it can disinfect a wide variety of non-porous materials, sanitize porous materials, and kill over 130 types of organisms. It is (US) government-registered to kill 99.99% of germs. The disinfectant has been used for decades for a variety of applications, including carpet sanitization and mould remediation.

“Pesticides and disinfectants have been used for so many years and are safe and effective, as long as they are used properly,” says Hamovic. “The micro thin layer that’s left after the ULV process can last for up to a week, yet it won’t hurt a dog that licks the ground after it’s dried, or someone who touches a disinfected surface and then rubs their eyes.” A room is safe to use just one hour after fumigation, although sessions are usually scheduled for the end of the day.

From office buildings, to casinos, hotels, schools and boats, owners and facility managers can take the extra step to disinfect. Facilities with a running cleaning schedule, for example biweekly, will receive a “clean zone” decal, to let the public know about the safety measure. Prices start from just US $0.20 per square foot.

StopSpread also has a location next to Texaco in Cole Bay, conveniently next to a carwash. The company also offers fumigation services for vehicles – ideal for high-use vehicles such as buses, taxis, and rental cars.

“We’re here to help and to give general advice to our customers about sanitation. We all have to work as a team to safely accommodate tourism, and welcome them back to the island safely,” says Hamovic.
