The Elevate Youth and Family Program supports young people between the ages of 15 and 24 in Sint Maarten who come from vulnerable situations, including those who have dropped out of school, finished vocational programs, or faced challenges such as protective custody or probation. Participation is voluntary – these youth choose Elevate because they want a chance to learn, grow, and improve their future.
Through educational scholarships, life-skills and work-ready workshops, volunteerism, mentorship, and family support, Elevate provides tools and structure while the real drive comes from the youth themselves. Each of this year’s 16 participants brings their own story, determination, and goals. Here, we spotlight three of them, sharing their voices, their mindset, and the futures they are working toward.
Surayha Blair (20) – GED, Sports Management
“Being part of the Elevate program means a lot to me. I’ve had to figure out a lot on my own without much support, and that’s been tough. This opportunity gives me the space to focus, grow, and finally turn things around – not just for me, but to make my wela proud and show that I can make something of myself.”
Through Elevate, Surayha looks forward to building confidence, improving academic skills, and learning how to stay consistent and focused. “It’s time I stop holding myself back. I’m serious about changing my life.”
Surayha’s dream is to study sports management abroad and build a career in the sports industry. “Sports have always inspired me, and I believe there’s power in using sports to bring people together and create opportunities. This goal matters because it’s not just about me, it’s about creating a life where I can also give back and help others like me.”
Weekly soccer games from Surayha’s childhood showed her how sports can unite a community. Losing the women’s national team in Sint Maarten was painful, but it pushed her to think bigger. “That moment made me realize I needed to leave and chase bigger opportunities. I want to move to the Netherlands, where many of my former teammates are playing now, and take my game to the next level.”
Surayha is also keeping her eyes on the near future. “Next year, if God is willing, I hope to make everything I’ve always talked about happen – get a job, my own place, and build a successful career. I know everything takes time, so I’m patiently waiting for my turn. I’m ready for what’s next. What inspires me the most is my wela, I want her to see her first grandchild do something positive.”
Jeananena Joseph (17) – Cook (NIPA), Future Chef & Entrepreneur
“This program means a lot because it will help me grow.”
Jeananena sees Elevate as a path to strengthen skills she needs to become both a chef and an entrepreneur. “I’m especially looking forward to learning about entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and budgeting. In the future, I don’t only want to become a professional chef, but I’d like to have my own business.”
For her, cooking is more than a career goal. “As a future chef, I want to make people happy, but what excites me the most is creating dishes.” Jeananena also hopes the program will help her become braver and more confident in pursuing her dreams.
Her biggest inspiration comes close to home. “My aunt inspires me the most, and I’m also guided by faith and trusting God.”
Gabrielle Pascal (16) – GED, Future Neuropsychologist
“It means a lot to be part of this program. It’s a chance to grow, learn, and meet people who are making something positive out of their journey. I’m really excited to be in a space that encourages learning and self-improvement.”
Gabrielle joined Elevate to challenge herself and step out of her comfort zone. “I’m looking forward to learning from others, building my confidence, and improving my communication. I want to get more comfortable with trying new things, especially in group settings.”
Her long-term dream is to become a neuropsychologist and support people going through hard times. “Mental health is super important, and I want to be someone others can turn to – someone who helps people feel understood and supported.”
These voices reflect the heart of Elevate: young people motivated to rise above challenges, stay focused, and shape new paths for themselves and their community. With the right guidance and community support, their determination shows what’s possible when opportunity meets commitment.
