Before joining Unity in Harmony, six-year-old Don M. faced challenges that many children with Down syndrome experience, feeling left out and misunderstood by peers who didn’t quite know how to connect with him. While he longed to play and be part of the group, the fast pace of activities and lack of understanding from other children often left him on the sidelines.
Everything changed when Don became part of 721 Kids Foundation’s Unity in Harmony project, delivered through foundations Oranje Fonds and Kinderpostzegels “Strengthening Families Together” programme. Through our Buddy Program, Don was paired with a peer who became not just a playmate, but a true friend, someone who takes time to explain games, encourages him to participate, and celebrates every small victory together.
Don’s mom shared: “Before Unity in Harmony, my son struggled to join in activities because other kids didn’t understand him. Through the Buddy Program, he was paired with a friend who not only plays with him during activities but also explains games so he can take part. Now, he comes home smiling and talking about his friends. For the first time, I feel like he truly belongs.”
For families like Don’s, the Unity in Harmony project means more than just inclusion, it’s about belonging. It gives children with developmental differences the confidence to participate, the joy of friendship, and the pride of being understood.
This project is part of the Strengthening Families Together programme – an initiative by Oranje Fonds and Kinderpostzegels, with Foresee Foundation for the Windward Islands coordinating the capacity-building component. The programme supports organisations across the Dutch Caribbean with knowledge, networks, and funding to strengthen vulnerable families.
At 721 Kids Foundation, we believe every child deserves the chance to thrive in a community that embraces them fully. Our programmes support children with disabilities and their families by creating inclusive environments where learning, play, and connection come together.
When you support 721 Kids Foundation, you help children like Don find their place, not just in a programme, but in a community that sees their potential and celebrates who they are. Together, we’re building stronger families, more compassionate friendships, and a world where every child feels they belong.
The 721 Kids Foundation welcomes volunteers, partners, and supporters who are passionate about making a difference.
