Through Cam's Lens

Through Cam's Lens

“And many years from now, it won’t matter how
I write the rhymes I do, yeah
Help me get back to the reason I sing for You”

It’s been weird the last two weeks. (Please bear in mind that I have absolutely no idea where this piece is going.) I’m naturally antisocial, except on social media, but the last two weeks I’ve just been in a hibernation kind of mind-frame. I’ve been working from home, not texting my peeps as much as I used to, and just living the “boxers all day” kind of life. Of course, I’d go out when I absolutely have to – like for food or work, occasionally allowing the sun to beat down on my beautiful skin.

You know when I feel the sun the MOST? On Wednesdays and Thursdays when I’m coaching my primary gym classes. There’s just something about the sun, plus kids that only listen some of the time, to equal absolute cooking! LOL! Sometimes I give them a water break, but it’s actually when I’m needing to step into the shade for a second.

Last week, I played volleyball with the older class. They weren’t exactly getting the gist of the game so I had to step in and play setter.

SN: Sorry, I hugged a friend tonight that had chickenpox, because I’m pretty sure I already had it as a kid, but now I’m itching. It could just be paranoia but, Lord, please save me from chicken pox. Amen.

Back to the story...

Imagine me running back and forth trying to make it fair and set the ball for both teams, in 103-degree weather. Hyperbole, I think, but you get the point. When I coached the younger kids the day after, we ended off the day playing tag. “Coach Cam” it is! Now I’m running up and down trying to tag these six-year-olds. Naturally, I couldn’t let them know that Zeus is my father, so I couldn’t go full speed. HOWEVER, the class teacher shouted, “Everyone else is it, catch the coach!” Pfffff! I was zooming around the court, spin moves, I must have broken at least 16 ankles. These kids couldn’t catch me!

On Sunday, I was telling Julie and Chanaz (my flag football moms) that everywhere I go now, all I hear is “Coach!” These kids see my everywhere and call out to me. Supermarkets, on shoots, at events, and at Danielle’s (the ladybug to my lightning bolt) dance school. It’s an amazing feeling, though: the way they get all excited when they see me. I was coaching four of the boys during flag football when Dys came behind me and hugged me while I’m kneeling down. Then when Bronson got hit in the eye on a catch, I ended up rubbing his eyebrow to make him feel better. It’s just a crazy, special, important feeling to be able to pour into these kids.

Castel messaged me the other day in reference to my Black History Month Project and said: “You are an anointed genius! You reach people and help change lives!” Insert upside down smiling emoji I don’t know, man. I mean, I know what he’s saying and I know it’s true. I’ve always felt like I have a natural ability to meet people where they are and “help” them. But with great power comes great responsibility. So I think it’s always been something I’ve tried to avoid.

Life, though, has a way of always getting you to, or right back to the place that you NEED to be.

I suppose purpose is what purpose does.

I did my best to keep this piece as cohesive as possible. If you didn’t like it, well it’s too late now because you’ve already read the whole thing… DEZNUTS! GOTT’IM!
