St. Maarten Heineken Regatta Drives Ocean Stewardship with the Local Community

The Sint Maarten Yacht Club Regatta Foundation is proud to announce two upcoming community-focussed initiatives designed to engage the local population, promote environmental sustainability, and showcase the artistic creativity of the island’s youth. The Foundation will be bringing island stewardship to life through the Regatta Art Competition and a collaborative lagoon clean-up event.

Showcasing the Talent of St. Maarten’s Youth

The Regatta Art Competition has been running for decades to highlight the artistic talent of children attending schools on the Dutch side of St. Maarten. Schools are invited to apply for the competition, giving students the opportunity to express their creativity and love for their island through art.

This initiative is more than just a contest; it is a platform for exposure. The artwork created by the children will be displayed at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, Regatta Village and various public locations, allowing locals and visitors alike to admire the talent of the next generation. Additionally, select winning designs will be printed as postcards, serving as unique souvenirs of the island’s culture.

The competition will have a Prize-Giving Ceremony on January 24, at Sint Maarten Yacht Club, where the best artworks will be recognised, and winners will receive fun prizes donated by local businesses.

Kayaking for a Cleaner Lagoon

In a hands-on effort to preserve the island’s marine environment, the Sint Maarten Yacht Club Regatta Foundation is organising a lagoon clean-up of the Simpson Bay Lagoon on February 8. This event is open to all – anyone on the island who wishes to contribute to a cleaner, healthier ecosystem is welcome to join.

Participants will depart from Kim Sha Beach using kayaks to access and clean areas of the lagoon that are difficult to reach from land. This initiative is being held in close collaboration with Tri-Sport, EPIC and The Nature Foundation St. Maarten.

To strengthen the impact of the clean-up, representatives from EPIC and The Nature Foundation will provide educational talks on sustainability and the importance of preserving our mangroves and waterways.
