In the Hot Seat with Jacky Rom

In the Hot Seat with Jacky Rom

For this week’s Hot Seat, Out N About sat down with Jacky Rom, an author and book writer. She tells us all about her favourite spots in St. Maarten, her charity efforts, and her novels.

Please introduce yourself. How would you describe your genre of novels?
I wrote my first novel at age 50, here in St. Maarten. I am currently writing my twentieth book, titled Fame to Felony, which is book #3 in the Sandra Bernstein Chronicles. Book #1 of this same series takes place in St. Maarten.

How did you start as an author, and where do you find creative inspiration?
I've written all my life—poetry as a child, and my first full-length musical at 17 years old. It’s people-watching that inspires me. I love observing the diversity of characters in people.

Do you have favourite places to eat, or can you recommend anywhere for our readers and visitors to St. Maarten this weekend?
The Caribbean is truly about barbecue. Depending on where you’re staying or touring, I’d suggest “Fat Boy” in Philipsburg, Captain’s Rib Shack in Simpson Bay, and, of course, the various Lo Lo’s in Grand Case.

Do you have any new hot spots to recommend?
Yes! Java in Grand Case has a charming ambience, trendy vibes, fabulous cocktails (or mocktails), professional and elegant food presentations, high-end options, and top-tier staff and service.

How do you integrate yourself into St. Maarten? Are you involved in any charity efforts?
I flew in as soon as possible on the first commercial flight into SXM after Hurricane Irma, on November 9th. It was imperative for me to be here to receive a couple of containers from Holland filled with children’s clothing and other essentials. Along with Jeff Jhangiani, I helped establish the non-profit All About a Smile, where 100% of the proceeds go directly to charity.

How do you keep it spicy?
Well, my favourite restaurant in Maho is Spices of India! They have tasty daal, biryani, desserts, and much, much more.

Give us the scoop—what’s the “hidden gem” here on the island?
I’d say Pizza Italy in Simpson Bay. It’s underrated and a true hidden gem. That said, I’d rather not tell too many people about it—I want to make sure I can still get a seat when I go! (He, he.) For a more refined Italian dining experience, I highly recommend Roma in Maho. Manager Marco provides fabulous hospitality, and Chef Matteo never fails to satisfy.

What is your favourite thing about being a creative professional?
Hearing that people enjoy the final product—it’s such a wonderful feeling!

And have you received any awards?
Last year, I was honoured with the Everything St. Maarten Award, which means the world to me, as I love this island with all my heart.

How do you overcome challenges like writer’s block?
I take a drive around the island—it works every time. Or I take a beach walk. I love Kim Sha Beach and walk there about 4–5 times a week. Once you reset your mojo, you’re good to go!

What advice would you give to anyone needing encouragement to pursue their dreams?
It’s a wonderful thing for anyone, at any age, to pursue their dreams. That’s why I offer online courses in Creative Writing, Public Speaking, and Acting. It’s never too late! Creative energy keeps us vibrant, and re-retirement means to “re-tire”—so put on a new wheel and keep rolling!

Do you have any fun New Year’s Eve plans?
If you’ve fully embraced the St. Maarten island mentality and lifestyle, you know you’ll be with great friends or “island family,” as we say, celebrating the year’s successes and later making resolutions. Living in the moment will be my plan, but I’ll surely be somewhere with great food, good spirits, and cheerful souls. Looking forward to making new connections this new year on TikTok and youtube, so please link up at with me @JackyRom
