Group 8 students of St. Joseph School proudly displayed their works of art in a recent exhibition, after learning about and practising the craft of wire bending throughout the school year.
“The exhibition was a showcase of all the students’ creations, celebrating their effort and creativity,” School Manager Shaina Fernandes-Carneiro told The KIDS Herald. On display were wire bending works depicting the national flower and bird, a scorpion, a Christmas tree, and Valentine’s Day-themed art.
The children were instructed by two local artists with extensive experience in wire art: Mr. Lambert Holder and Mr. Kenrick La Touche. The programme was coordinated and supported by Ms. Marcelia Henry from the Sint Maarten National Commission for UNESCO – a global organisation that works to preserve local cultural heritage all around the world. UNESCO provided funding and support for this art project.
Mrs. Shaina, who first saw a wire bending exhibition at another school, says she was “truly inspired by the creativity and cultural value it promoted.” She approached Ms. Henry and Mr. Holder about bringing such a programme to St. Joseph School, and the rest is history. The school has been running the programme since August 2022, fostering a love for local arts and providing students with hands-on creative experiences.
