The history of Pac-Man, an early video game

By Roger, age 11

Have you ever asked your parents if they played Pac-Man? You know the game where a big yellow mouth floats around a maze eating dots.

I bet they did! Pac-Man was one of the first video games ever made – and it was the most popular game for a long time.

Let’s take a time machine and slam the dials back to 1979. That is when a new game was being created in Japan. It would come to be called Pac-Man, but originally (in 1979) it was called Puk-Man.

Pac-Man was released in 1980 and it was made by Nanceo. Ready for this? It made more money than the Star Wars movie!

But unfortunately, it got copied MANY times. Eventually, Nintendo and many other gaming consoles offered Pac-Man. It was most people's favourite game to play back then!

Later, there were other games like Super Mario Bros, Smash Bros, Pokémon, Mario Kart, and Mario Party, but Pac-Man was a simple game – easy to understand and easy to play.

Now in 2023, we play Roblox, Fortnite, Call Of Duty, Sonic the Hedgehog 1,2,&3, and GTA 5. Of course, these games come with movies – Sonic the Hedgehog the movie and the sequel, the Mario movies.

And guess what? Pac-Man was so popular in the past – yes, he and Ms. Pac-Man also got a movie.

So get your game console out and see how many dots you can get the Pac-Man to eat – and, remember, even video games have history.

I wonder if you could do a Pac-Man project as a school assignment!
