Halloween craft: spider headbands

Whether you celebrate Halloween or not, it’s a fun time to get creative with costumes, props and face-paint. A spider headband is a cute alternative to a regular hat. You can make it cute with two big eyes; or you can be silly and give it lots of small eyes! You can also add any extra decorations you like.

Adult supervision required; let an adult handle the scissors and taping.

You’ll need

* Black construction paper

* School glue

* Tape

* Scissors

* White paper and black marker (or googly eyes)

* Pencil

Instructions

* First, make the headband. Cut a piece of black construction paper about 4 inches wide – long enough to fit around your head. If the paper is not long enough, cut two strips and tape them together. Keep a little bit of extra space so that there is a small overlap between the beginning and the end of the strip.

* After making sure the strip is long enough to comfortably fit around your head, fold it in half, length-wise.

* Next, make the legs. Cut eight strips of black construction paper, each about 1 inch thick, and 9 or 10 inches long. The measurements do not have to be precise. Fold the strips on alternating sides (like an accordion).

* Now take the headband and make eight equally spaced dots with a pencil on the lower edge of the band. On each of these dots, place a little bit of school glue, and stick the first square of the spider legs onto the band.

* Then, take the top half of the band (which was pre-folded), add some school glue, and fold it down to cover those first squares. Let the glue dry completely.

* With the legs facing up, wrap the headband around your head, and have an adult tape the edges into place so that it fits nicely.

* Take it back off and, lastly, add the eyes. You can choose to make two eyes, or many eyes. Draw the eyes on white paper with a black marker (an outer circle and black dots for pupils). Cut them out with a scissors and glue them onto the headband. Or, if you have googly eyes from the store, you can glue them on instead. In either case, let the glue dry – and you’re done!
