Skipping the gym after vacation!

Hi, my name is Desiree Winkel, owner and founder of Fitness Coaching. Fitness Coaching is a studio/gym where you can work out with professional trainers. Among the workout programs we offer are boot camps, cardio boxing, weight loss training, group training and personal training.

I have heard it all. No; I am not making a joke. I think I have heard every excuse why a person is not able to work out, or why they can’t start back after a vacation. You come back from a well-earned vacation and you try to go to the gym most days, but then you decide to take a rest day. Then your rest day turns into a few days off, and before you know it, three weeks have passed without one day of exercise. Like many who take a workout break, you begin to wonder, “Have I lost my muscles? How long does it take before I’m out of shape?”

There are lots of reasons to take a break from your workout routine: vacation, harsh weather (like the rain here in Sint Maarten), work demands, family obligations – even the most dedicated fitness enthusiast may be forced to stop for a while due to sore muscles, illness or injury. You shouldn’t push yourself to work out every day without a break, because your body needs rest and recovery days to repair muscle fibres and strengthen them between workouts.

People who have told me “I work out every day” are fast giving up their six-day a week workout. However, if you go beyond a week without activity, you begin to experience the effects of “detraining” (also called deconditioning) – a phenomenon in which you lose the beneficial effects of training. As opposed to rest and recovery, detraining is an extended rest interval that results in reduced physical fitness.

The good news is that deconditioning is reversible once you get active again. This article discusses the variables that affect loss of fitness, how detraining affects your body, ways you can minimize losses during a detraining period, and how you can regain your previous level. So going on vacation or taking a short break from fitness is not bad at all; you just have to set a goal day to return to your workout routine.

The great thing about getting back in that routine is the fact that within a week, you already feel better, your energy comes back and you feel happy you did it.

Here are some tips from Fitness Coaching to start back training after vacation:

* Book the date and time with your trainer.

* Organize your gym outfit.

* Go shopping for healthy foods.

* Stick a picture on your fridge with your goal.

* Make your gym date an important one.

* Get a workout buddy.

* Start drinking lots of water.

In the beginning, it may be hard to get back in that routine, but after hearing yourself make all the excuses why you can’t get back into your workout routine, you should smile, brush it away, and push yourself to go.

These days, Fitness Coaching offers so many great programs that make working out fun. If you tell us what your goals are, we will get you there. Together we are stronger. We will motivate you in a way that will make you like fitness.

Remember fitness is not only lifting weights and getting big muscles; fitness is also functional training. With functional fitness exercises, you train your muscles to work together and prepare them for daily tasks by simulating common movements you might do at home, at work or in the gym. While using various muscles in the upper and lower body at the same time, functional fitness exercises also emphasize core stability. It’s the number one priority in our Fitness Coaching studio.

Pierre (73 years old):  “Since I started training in this fitness studio, Desiree and her trainers have made me understand what it means to enjoy core stability. I could not for 20 seconds stand on one leg, or even get up without pushing myself from a bench. Within a couple of lessons, I learned how to contract specific muscles, and – using my brain to work with my movements – I feel stronger, fitter and have way more confidence in what I can do.”
