Desiree - The joy of working out OUTDOORS!


Hi! My name is Desiree Winkel – owner and founder of Fitness Coaching. Fitness Coaching is a studio/gym where you can work out with professional trainers. Among the workout programs we offer are boot camps, cardio boxing, functional training, weight loss training, group training and personal training. We are currently doing our workouts outdoors and on the beaches, but we also offer the option to train clients at their home.

Our lives changed tremendously in just a couple of weeks. We as Sint Maarteners are now flexible, since we know what it is to lose everything in just one storm; and although it’s hard to stay positive in all of these changes, I see we are bouncing back time after time. It is so important to stay positive in these difficult times that are continuously changing. I am probably one of many who had to close my facility to save the business I had worked in for some 16 years – a huge adjustment.

Now weeks later, having made the decision to give up my units and only train outdoors, my energy is back and all I want is for Sint Maarten to be healthy, fit and boost up their immune system. I am an outdoor person. It just runs in my veins and I have always wanted to do more outdoors. Of course, we must deal with the heat, rain and everything else that comes with outdoor training. We live on a great island with breezes, shade and sun, all of which is good for us – and it’s all free! So why not enjoy it to the fullest?

It is also quite easy to social distance; the fresh air gives us hardly any risk of getting infected and if we sanitize our hands the way we should, doing our workout outdoors should be pretty risk-free. While exercising indoors is valuable, research shows that exercising outside requires more energy, forcing our bodies to get better workouts and burn added calories and fat. Outdoor elements such as increased temperature, wind and hills provide a natural resistance and make our bodies work harder and burn more calories.

The classes we are focusing on start at 6:00 and 7:00am in the morning; and the evening classes start at 5:30 and 6:30 – just before the sun really comes out or goes down, so it’s not too hot; and the places where we train have shade.

We use rubber bands, dumbbells, mats, bars, balls and all you can imagine to give your body what it needs. Being in a closed area for more than 30 minutes will put you at a greater risk than being outdoors for as long as you want. You see, dear Sint Maarten people, there is a solution for every problem. Stay fit, stay healthy and spread happiness.
