Marseille edge Benfica on penalties to reach Europa League semi-finals

MARSEILLE-- Olympique de Marseille claimed a penalty shootout win over Benfica on Thursday to reach the Europa League semi-finals after Faris Moumbagna's late second-half goal levelled the tie at 2-2 on aggregate.

Kimmich heads Bayern Munich past Arsenal and into semis

MUNICH, Germany- - Bayern Munich's Joshua Kimmich powered in a 63rd-minute header to give them a 1-0 victory over a toothless Arsenal on Wednesday and send them through to the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in four years with a 3-2 aggregate win. Germany international Kimmich timed his run into the box perfectly to connect with a Raphael Guerreiro cross and put Bayern, who had earlier hit the woodwork twice from a double chance, in the driving seat following a 2-2 first-leg draw.

The Bavarians, enduring their worse domestic season in more than a decade, will next face Real Madrid in the last four while outgoing Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel became the first German coach to reach the last four with three different teams. "Unbelievable win. It's been a tough season for us and we've had to fight and grind at times," said Bayern's top scorer Harry Kane, who had bagged a goal in the first leg. "Today was just that - we knew it was going to be a tough game but also that at home we could make the difference with our fans there. "As always in these types of games, the first half was a bit cagey. We said at halftime to up the tempo and the pressing and be better with the ball.

That's what we did." There was little to separate the two sides in a cautious first half with Bayern threatening early with two shots from Kane. Arsenal, bidding to reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2009, were almost caught on the break in the 23rd minute when Noussair Mazraoui's cutback was palmed wide by David Raya. The Arsenal keeper also blocked a Jamal Musiala shot a minute later as Bayern had a brief spell of pressure in the first half. The best chance fell to Arsenal in the 32nd with Gabriel Martinelli's first-time shot, after good work from Martin Odegaard, going straight to keeper Manuel Neuer, who set a competition record with his 58th clean sheet. Bayern Chance The hosts went close straight after the restart with Leon Goretzka's header bouncing off the crossbar before Guerreiro hit the post with a shot on the rebound. But they gradually upped the pressure and Kimmich charged into the box and drilled his header past Raya. Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta made several substitutions but they could not find a way into the German box and had no real scoring chances in the second half with Bayern remaining disciplined and in control of the game. "Very sad and disappointed with the final result," Arteta said.

"It was a tie of very small margins. In the first leg we conceded two poor goals. "It was a game where you can see an error or individual brilliance would make the difference. The goal put them in a really good position. We lacked the magic to unlock the game and open that door. That’s why we are out." The defeat caps a disappointing four days for Arteta's team after their Premier League title challenge suffered a blow with their loss to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Perfect Palmer hits four as Chelsea thrash Everton 6-0

Chelsea's Cole Palmer scores their fifth goal from the penalty spot past Everton's Jordan Pickford during their Premier League match at Stamford Bridge, London.

LONDON-- Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer scored four goals, including a hat-trick in the first 30 minutes, as his side hammered Everton 6-0 on Monday to maintain their push for a European spot and leave the visitors still hovering above the relegation zone. The 21-year-old Palmer underlined his England credentials with a classic left foot, header, right foot treble and then added a second-half penalty as Chelsea ran riot. Nicolas Jackson and substitute Alfie Gilchrist were also on target as Chelsea remain ninth on 47 points but with games in hand on all the teams above them. It was a sobering night for Sean Dyche's visitors, however, as the heavy defeat leaves Everton 16th on 27, two places and two points above the relegation zone. Everton actually had the first good chance but Beto blasted over from point-blank range after 10 minutes and it was downhill from then on. Palmer got things moving after 13 minutes when he nutmegged Jarrad Branthwaite, played a one-two with Jackson and instantly clipped a shot from the edge of the box beyond the diving Jordan Pickford. Five minutes later more intricate passing – albeit alongside some tentative Everton defending – set up the second as Pickford parried a Jackson shot straight to Palmer, who nodded it into the empty net. Pickford also handed Palmer his third but it was an entirely different situation as the midfielder intercepted a poor clearance 30 metres out and, with his weaker right foot, chipped brilliantly over the retreating keeper after 29 minutes. Jackson made it 4-0 just before the break when he brought down Marc Cucurella’s cross and spun neatly to fire a low shot just inside the post. Palmer’s fourth came from the penalty spot but only after captain Conor Gallagher had to intervene to shove away Jackson and Noni Madueke after the latter was brought down in the box and they wrestled with the ball. Gallagher eventually gave the ball to regular taker Palmer who stroked it home 64 minutes. That took him alongside Manchester City's Erling Haaland at the top of the Premier League scoring charts with 20 and his tally in all competitions to 23 as he became the first Chelsea player to reach the 20 mark since Eden Hazard in 2018/19. Young substitute Gilchrist smashed home the sixth goal in the final minute, his first for the west London club, moments after coming on as yet another Pickford parry, to keep out a Ben Chilwell shot, fell straight to the 20-year-old. Chelsea's good, if inconsistent, run of form has lifted them into contention for the minor European competitions – not the aspirations of the 2021 Champions League winners but some sort of progress after they were becalmed in mid-table two months ago - and their fans were delighted with Monday's show. Everton, however, remain in dire danger of a first relegation since 1951 and face a massive showdown with fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest on Sunday having seen their goal difference, as well as their confidence, take a hammering.

Mbappe scores twice as PSG beat 10-man Barca to reach semi-finals

BARCELONA, Spain-- Paris St Germain's Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the second half to help his side to a 4-1 comeback win at 10-man Barcelona in their Champions League quarter-final, second leg to wrap up a 6-4 aggregate victory on Tuesday. After winning 3-2 in Paris and taking a 1-0 lead with an early Raphinha goal in the return, Barca collapsed after going down to 10 men just before the half-hour when last man Ronald Araujo was red-carded for fouling Bradley Barcola. Former Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele equalised for the visitors just before the break while Vitinha and Mbappe finished the job in the second half, with PSG facing Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals after the Germans beat Atletico Madrid. Having failed to get past the round of 16 in the last two seasons and being pinned against the ropes by a Barca side who were in the ascendancy, PSG put on a gritty performance to make the most of the home side's mistakes and turn the tie around. "I feel very proud, the players showed a lot of character and desire," PSG manager Luis Enrique told Canal+. "We showed what we wanted to do here. We conceded a goal but we remained intact in mentality. We did everything to be better than Barca." PSG manager Luis Enrique, who won the treble in charge of Barcelona in 2015, made three changes from the defeat in Paris. Bringing in Barcola up front was crucial as the France winger was a constant menace to Barca’s defence, running up and down the left channel as PSG dominated from the start. But Barcelona seemed comfortable to sit back and counter attack, with Raphinha giving them the lead in the 12th minute. Teenager Lamine Yamal took a long pass in his stride before slicing past Nuno Mendes in the right channel and putting the ball on a plate for the Brazilian to score the opener. Barca then wasted a chance to extend their lead when Robert Lewandowski missed from close range and were down to 10 men just before the half-hour after last man Ronald Araujo was shown a red card for a foul on Barcola just outside the penalty area. The Uruguay defender and his Barca team mates argued with the referee, saying it was a shoulder charge and Pau Cubarsi was close by and ready to challenge Barcola, but it was in vain and Araujo eventually made his way off the field. Former Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele put the resulting free kick just wide but did not miss the target nine minutes later, firing home for the visitors in the 40th to equalise on the night from another great play by Barcola. PSG Pressure PSG were back on top in the second half and piled on the pressure until Vitinha finally managed to put the visitors in front on the night after 54 minutes. Dembele played a short corner to Achraf Hakimi, who rolled a pass to Vitinha just outside the area and the Portuguese midfielder had all the time in the world to slot a shot just inside Marc Andre ter Stegen's right-hand post. PSG kept up the pressure and in the 61st minute Barca full back Joao Cancelo made a reckless sliding tackle to take down Dembeleand concede a penalty that Mbappe fired into the top corner to make it 3-1 as PSG moved ahead in the tie. As Barca tried to find a goal to take the game to extra time, France striker Mbappe made the most of a counter attack to score from close-range and wrap up a semi-final place. "Everyone believed in it. We didn't give up," Dembele told Canal+ "We knew we were going to score goals. It was great work from the whole team. The coach's tactics were perfect. We made a great effort after conceding the first goal. "Qualifying for the semi-final is a big thing. We're crossing our fingers to make it to the final. We'll have to recover well."
