Hi, my name is Desiree Winkel, owner and founder of Fitness Coaching. Fitness Coaching is a studio/gym where you can work out with professional trainers. Among the workout programs we offer are boot camps, cardio boxing, weight loss training, group training and personal training.
Disclaimer: Desiree Winkel is a contributor. While she does her best to relay her information correctly, please note that it is for entertainment and learning, but in NO WAY should it replace actual medical advice from a medical doctor or professional. If you are suffering from or living with an ailment, or are concerned about possibly having one, the Health & Beauty strongly suggests you see your healthcare provider.
At Fitness Coaching, we get all sorts of visitors with diabetes – both male and female – ranging in age from eight to 80. Normally, diabetes should not hold you back from exercising. As a matter of fact, exercise has many benefits and will improve your health situation.
Weight training – also known as resistance, body weight or strength training – is one of the most beneficial forms of exercise you can perform, especially if you live with diabetes. When performed properly, weight training delivers a host of health benefits including the following:
- Increased physical strength.
- Denser, stronger bones.
- Increased metabolic rate at rest (allows you to eat more calories, whilst staying lean).
- It burns body fat and helps prevent obesity.
- Releases key endorphins that make you feel great.
- Improves balance and coordination.
- It can protect against sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss).
- Increased glucose uptake (it can help manage diabetes).
My favourite quote is: “Change your mindset, before you change your behaviour.” Easier said than done; right? But if you really want something – I mean you really want it – then I strongly believe you can do it, no matter what it is. So if your goal is getting healthier, then that is what you need to do. GET IT DONE! The more value you see in your health and fitness goals, the more attention you’ll give to them.
In your health and fitness journey, you have to be realistic. For example, if you scroll on the internet checking out how fit someone may look, don’t forget that the following list may have a lot to do with why they look so great:
- Genetics (different parents, ethnicities).
- Years of training experience.
- Expert coaching and mentorship.
- Most use of anabolic steroids.
- More free time (giving them the ability to train multiple times a day).
Not only should you be realistic when setting your training goals, but also be original, define your own personal success criteria, stay focused and make the best of your own unique circumstances, rather than comparing yourself to everyone else.
Every time you set a goal, ask yourself the following: Is it S.M.A.R.T.?
S – Specific, Significant, Stretching
M – Measurable, Meaningful, Motivational
A – Attainable, Achievable
R – Realistic
Physical fitness is composed of several components, including cardiorespiratory endurance, body composition, muscular endurance, muscular strength/power, flexibility and balance/coordination.
Each component of fitness has a unique role in the preservation of health. Whereas aerobic exercise primarily targets the cardiorespiratory endurance component, strength training appears to play a prominent role in many, if not all, of the other six components to physical fitness. Thus, strength training has unique potential in helping to arrest much of the functional decline and disease progression associated with aging.
Most chronic illnesses benefit from training. Aging brings imbalance and sarcopenia (age related loss of skeletal muscle mass and subsequent loss of strengths and function). At Fitness Coaching, can we help you if you do have diabetes? Yes, we can. You have to make a plan and stick with it. That is most important. We will be there to set a training program that fits your body type and special needs. Investment in your health is the best investment ever. With your dedication and our help, we promise you will soon regret you did not get started sooner.
