French Quarter returns to its cycling roots with staging of first Duathlon

MARIGOT—SXM Sport Evasion organised a successful Duathlon on Sunday, January 31, in French Quarter marking a different change of scene from the usual running and mountain biking events held in Bellevue.

The running and mountain biking race was held on Rue des Trois Freres in the school district and was named after the late Albert Rousseau (Le Prix Albert Rousseau) who was President of the first Cycling Federation in St. Martin and who formed the first cycling team, Jeunesse Cyclisme Orlèans, his daughter Marie-Paule Rousseau explained.
The race drew participants from children in all age categories up to Juniors, seniors, masters, women and a handful of the island’s top running and cycling athletes. Competitors were required to complete a number of run segments depending on category, transition to mountain bike for a hilly off-road course, before finishing with another run segment. The children categories started first with adults starting later.
Masters A, Masters B, and Seniors completed two run segments, eight bike loops and one run to finish. For women and Juniors, it was two run loops, five bike loops and one run loop to finish.
Wilson Sanon emerged the overall winner of the day, sealing the win in the Juniors category with a dominating performance. Jahkim Carty was second and Yerlin Gracias third.
Masters A (40 plus) was won by Mark Maidwell with Vincent Guibreteau in second and Michael Calixte third. It was a pleasure to see President of Avenir Sportif Club Patrick Trival taking part in the race in Master B as he is better known for organising his club’s running races every year.
Seniors (19 to 39) was won by Gregory Pigeon from SXM Tri Academie with Otis Paines in second and Jeannot Gouin in third.
Celine Verdonck from SXtreme Runners took the honours in the women’s category. Susy Piscione was second and Annee Blaum finished third. Results of the children categories were not immediately available.
