PHILIPSBURG--University of St. Martin (USM) is promoting academic tourism with new course offerings to teachers in French St. Martin.

Courses planned are English, English as a Second Language (ESL) and Spanish. In January USM started training participants through an agreement with the Observatoire and the Pole Emploi. Participants are presently completing their three-phased course: Multilingual Appreciation, Job Training and USM School of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning (SCELL) courses.

On Tuesday, March 7, USM will begin training with French civil servants through USM SCELL in collaboration with the Observatoire. The name of the course is ‘English for French Teachers.’ This course will [commence – Ed.] on March 10 and finishes May 26. Classes will be at the USM from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

The final planning session was held on Friday, March 3, 2017, in the USM Boardroom. Present were Head of the Department of Education in French St. Martin Evelyne Fleming; President of the Observatoire Dr. Louis Jeffrey; Director of the Observatoire Arnauld Benet; USM President Dr. Francio Guadeloupe; USM Dean Geneve Philip-Durham and SCELL Director Eion Maison.

Maison was high in praises for the collaboration between USM and the Observatoire. He explained that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in January 2016 between USM and the Observatoire. USM entered into this agreement with the Observatoire consistent with its mission to offer quality career and academic education that will provide students with a solid foundation to enter the field of their chosen profession or to further academic studies. “The University is also committed to the continuous development of programmes that will serve the quality of life of the people residing on St. Maarten and St. Martin, the wider Caribbean basin, the Americas and by extension the world,” it was stated in a press release on Friday.

The Observatoire St. Maarten, St. Martin entered into the agreement consistent with its mission to promote cooperation and cross-border projects in any form, organise continuing and post graduate education and training and develop social and socially-responsible economy in St Martin.
